The Portal men's soccer team defeated the Lincoln County Red Devils in the first round of the GHSA state playoffs Wednesday at home.

This win helped to secure South Georgia Tormenta FC's spot in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The team has four preseason matches, three home tournaments, and several key home conference matchups. The Eagles hope to improve on the 23-win season from a year ago and make the team's first NCAA Tournament since 2013.

This is the fourth year in a row that the Lady Blue Devils have advanced to the second round.

For the season, del Castillo is 15-5 in singles, including an unbeaten 7-0 mark in Sun Belt action this Spring. This is the first weekly honor for del Castillo, who was the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year in 2022 and a first team singles honoree in 2023.

Howard guided Georgia Southern to its first 20-win season in two decades with a 21-10 overall record in 2022-23. The 21 wins were the most in a single-season since 2000-01. Howard also led Georgia Southern to its first postseason victory and its first berth in over three decades in the 2023 Women's Basketball Invitational.

Since the team’s ascent to the professional ranks of USL League One in 2019, South Georgia Tormenta FC has never lost a round of the Open Cup to a Championship team.

Coach Brad Sheffield says the win shows the growth of the players, many of whom have played together since rec ball.
