Georgia Southern journalism graduate hopes to ‘be a voice’ for Asian, Black stories
Waycross native Javon Huynh has written for campus publications like Sincerely Southern and participated in the 2023 Voices Summer Fellow for the Asian American Journalist Association. He interned at WJCL and implemented a journalism course for his hometown YMCA's summer camp program.

Educator awarded Conservation Teacher of Year grant
For the project, the school’s third and fourth graders will research plants native to Georgia’s Piedmont ecoregion to then plan, install and manage a garden to attract a variety of pollinators. The garden will be used as an outdoor classroom, where older students will teach younger students about pollinators, native plants and biodiversity. Summer campers will work in the garden when school is out of session, and proceeds from a farmer’s market next fall will fund future garden projects.

State releases 2023 CCRPI report; See Bulloch scores
Bulloch County outperformed the state in the majority of the CCRPI’s component areas for each grade segment - elementary, middle, and high schools. The school district significantly outperformed the state in the Closing the Gap component. Also, Bulloch County’s four-year graduation rate of 89.10% is higher than the state’s rate of 84.9%. Brooklet Elementary received Distinguished School status.
