Bulloch County honored fallen soldiers on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2023 at the Emma Kelly Theater. The 2023 ceremony began at 10:30 with music by 15 year old Issac Sherrod with the program beginning at 11:00 AM. The American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 coordinated the ceremony.

Refreshments were served prior to the ceremony by the Daughters of the American Revolution and lunch was provided by the American Legion members at the Dexter Allen Post after the ceremony.  Joiner Anderson Funeral Home and Bulloch Memorial Gardens sponsors the annual program.

The program began with Captain Kenny Thomas, Sergeant Andy Nay and Corporal Aneshia Hill with the Bulloch County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard presenting the colors.  American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 member Gary Martin served as the Master of Ceremony.

The ceremony included the intoning of the names of all who have given their life for our county from or connected to Bulloch County.

Phil Crowley

Statesboro Native, Army and Vietnam veteran, Phil Crowley presented the keynote address. Phil has a website where he has chronicled his stories from Vietnam.  You can CLICK HERE to visit his website.

Crowley shared how his experience in Vietnam had impacted him and so many others.  Veterans that were lucky enough to survive have struggled with PTSD, guilt for surviving and cancer from Agent Orange exposure.  He credits his wife, family and his great support system for helping him get through his darkest days.

One of the ways Crowley works to give back and support his fellow Vets is through the Statesboro Blues Chapter of the US Veterans Motorcycle Club.  The club is made up of veterans throughout the country.

"Words cannot express what is in a Veterans heart.  You can look into their eyes and sense the loneliness and pain," said Phil Crowley.  "We must remember the lives lived, not the loss, to honor the fallen Veterans.  Ceremonies like today are important to remember the fallen and to keep their memory alive.  We have an obligation to never forget and to keep their legacy alive for future generations."

Wreathes Placed

Prior to the 11 AM Memorial Day service, Veterans also placed wreaths at the Veterans Memorial monuments located at Triangle Park, the Bulloch County Annex and Statesboro City Hall.  They also placed flags on graves throughout the county.
