SFD and SPD held 20th 9/11 anniversary service on Saturday

The Statesboro Fire Department and the Statesboro Police Departments held a joint 9/11 service Saturday morning at 9 AM at the Statesboro Fire Department station one on East Grady Street.

The Statesboro Fire Department and the Statesboro Police Departments held a joint 9/11 service Saturday morning at 9 AM at the Statesboro Fire Department station one on East Grady Street.

The 20th anniversary ceremony included members of SFD, SPD and Bulloch County EMS.

Statesboro Police Chief Mike Broadhead opened the ceremony with remarks discussing the power of the American Spirit how 9/11brought us our country together.

He reminded us about how the power of the moment impacted all of us and how we long to see our country pull that American Spirit back, bringing our country together again.

Statesboro Deputy Fire Chief Bobby Duggar gave the opening prayer followed by a procesional of the SPD and SFD honor guard. Then the lowering of the flags to half mast.

Then prayers were offered from each agency.

  • Bulloch County Deputies Aneisha Best and Andy Nay presented the policeman prayer
  • Bulloch County Paramedic Loyd Shurling presented the Paramedics Prayer
  • Bulloch County Volunteer Firefighter Joe Carter presented the Firefighters Prayer

This was followed by the ringing of the fireman's bell.

Statesboro Fire Department Administrative Assistant Kathleen O' Conner, who was living on Long Island the day of the attack gave brief remarks about the 9/11 attacks.

She lost a family member in the World Trade Towers on 9/11 and two of her brothers responded to the fires as NYFD firefighters.

Assistant Fire Chief Jason Baker closed the program discussing how difficult the last few days have been at SFD as they mourn the loss of one of their own, Lt. Chris Applebee. Through faith and strength of the brotherhood of the Fire Department they will get through this dark moment for the department.

Cindy Hulsey with Bulloch Memorial Gardens and Joiner Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory provided refreshments after the ceremony.
