Restoring the Breach has extended a helping hand to children thanks to their ME First Tutoring initiative. Started in 2017, ME First Tutoring is a tutoring program designed as an accessible hub for students to become more proficient in math (M) and English language arts (E). This weekly event at the Statesboro Library gives kids from grades K-12 a safe place to excel.
"I would say the mission of ME First Tutoring is definitely setting an educational foundation," said LaShai Campbell, executive director and co-founder of Restoring the Breach. "We focus on math and English first so that building that foundation, students can be successful in all their other subjects. If you can be successful in math, you can be successful in science; if you can be successful in English, you can be successful in social studies."

ME First tutoring has done multiple events like parties or public health classes through Georgia Southern. Sometimes they even get lessons from the Chemistry Department to teach them about science.
"They actually had a STEM activity and brought microscopes and things like that," Campbell said. "The children could see various smaller things; atoms, cells, and parasites that you can't see with your natural eyes."
ME First naturally helps kids with their homework, but it can also be a tool to help your child get ahead of the class. If no homework assignments need to be done, workbooks and worksheets are given to students instead.

"As we see them become more advanced, we give them higher level grades," Campbell said. "We've gotten real great reviews from parents about grades increasing."
While the service is mainly geared toward younger kids, older students can also partake in tutoring, a beneficial resource for older students struggling with literacy issues. These students are kept in a separate room from the younger students to help make older students more comfortable about their situation.
ME First Tutoring is an excellent resource for kids in their academic journey, whether they're struggling or wish to advance a little faster. Parents who want to sign up for their kids can do so at the Restoring the Breach website or by email.
Tutoring is held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 5-6:30pm at the Statesboro-Bulloch County Library.
