BROOKLET – Having two weeks off, the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets Varsity Flag Football program doesn’t seem like they missed a beat. Their last game was against Washington County, where they won 13-0 to win the area championships and improve to 18-0 on the season.
Now they are back at home at Fred Shaver Field for the first and second rounds of the state playoffs. The Yellow Jackets will be hosting South Effingham for the first round game at 5pm, and if they win that game, then they will play the winner between Jordan of Columbus and Jenkins of Savannah. It’s a one and done, so the pressure is on.
“We have three teams coming tomorrow, and they're all good,” head coach Marci Cochran said. “They all made it to the state tournament, so they all deserve to be here, so we gotta bring our A game tomorrow.”
Speaking of A game, South Effingham may be a four seed, but they are underrated. They are known for being quick and throwing short passes, so something that the Yellow Jackets have been focusing on is making sure defense steps up and doesn’t miss flags and everyone stays on their given assignments.
The Yellow Jackets may be 18-0 on the season, but overall they are 57-0. Ever since they started this program in Fall of 2021, they have not lost a game. When asked how imperative it is that they continue that win streak, coach Cochran had a lot to say about how difficult it would be and the challenge that lay ahead for her girls.
“Every year it gets a little more difficult to keep winning because one, the pressure to continue to win is on their shoulders, and that’s a lot of pressure for them to handle,” Cochran said. “And two, everybody is getting better, everybody has played flag longer, everybody’s starting to buy into flag and all the teams have gotten so much better, so for us to continue to win is going to be a tough challenge.”
The challenge may be hard, but the Yellow Jackets are definitely up for it. With a 57-0 lead on everyone else, the question isn’t are the Yellow Jackets prepared for everyone, but is everyone prepared for those Yellow Jackets?
