After an eventful opening weekend, Bulloch County football is ready for a busy Week 2 with two teams in action. Although the Portal Panthers and the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets both have byes, the Statesboro Blue Devils and the Bulloch Academy Gators are ready to roll into Week 2.

The Blue Devils will be traveling to Kathleen, GA to take on the Veterans Warhawks and the Bulloch Academy Gators will be hosting the Claxton Tigers with both games kicking off at 7:30pm.

Coming off a season opening win, the 2025 season already has a different feel than the last. Last week, the Blue Devils defeated the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets 21-10. Head coach Matt Dobson originally pronounced defense being the biggest reason for that win, but after watching film, he realized that it was a concerted effort with all three phases firing on all cylinders.

“Looking back, physicality was the best part of what we saw on film, then ball security,” Dobson stated. “I thought we really won the game in the trenches, both offensively and defensively.”

Now with that game in their rearview and week two upon us, the Blue Devils have set their sights on the Veterans Warhawks and are on the prowl for their second win of the season. If the Blue Devils were to go 2-0 on the season, this would be the best start for them since the 2019-20 season.

After last week’s win, the Blue Devils have been focusing on a lot of technical details to prepare for the Warhawks, who went 1-9 in the 2024 season, and are coming into this matchup looking for their first win of the 2025 season against the Blue Devils.

BULLOCH ACADEMY GATORS

The Bulloch Academy Gators are coming off an electric 49-20 win over the Portal Panthers to open up their 2025 season. Head coach Aaron Phillips says the mentality of the Gators is “BA versus Everybody.” With a young team, there is no better way to think. The Gators are “unique” in their film studies, as they tend to only pay attention to themselves and not their opponents.

Coach Phillips praised the experience of his offense, especially juniors, quarterback Sam Hubbard, and running back Danye Garvin. He mentioned how they are both very seasoned and how the offense runs through them every play.

Heading into Week 2, the Gators will be hosting the Claxton Tigers, who also finished their 2024 season 1-9, as they will be looking to find their first win of the 2025 season against the Gators.

The Tigers are under new leadership, but an old familiar face for the Bulloch Academy family, as coach Phillip Richards makes his way back to his old chomping grounds.

Up Next

The Portal Panthers and the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets both have bye weeks as they prepare for their next games next Friday, August 29, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The Portal Panthers will host the Twiggs County Cobras for their first home game of the season, and the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets will travel to Savannah, GA, to take on the Islands Sharks for their first region game of the season.
