Check out the following events and classes that are coming up in May at the Averitt Center in downtown Statesboro.

Cotton Rose Spring 2023 Recital

May 6th at 7 p.m. and May 7th at 3 p.m. the Cotton Rose School of Dance presents its Spring 2023 Dance Recital and Beauty and the Beast in the Emma Kelly Theater (33 E. Main St.). Our dance students study ballet and other forms of dance all throughout the school year. Each year, at the end of the year, the teaching staff organize and choreograph dances for a dance recital and a mini-ballet to allow the students to showcase their talent and what they have learned in class. This year the mini-ballet will be Beauty and the Beast. Don’t miss this family event designed to feature our students and provide an evening of entertainment for the patrons. Tickets are just $25.

Michael Mallies Gallery Opening

Michael Mallies’ gallery exhibit will open in our Main Gallery (33 E. Main St.) on May 11th. Mallies started learning his craft at the early age of fourteen. Evening classes were free at his public school. He eventually studied at the New York School of Visual Arts and at the Art Students League. His paintings represent a lifetime of various styles that he enjoys. He has had other showings in New Fairfield, Connecticut and Savannah, Georgia.

Our Main Gallery at 33 E. Main St. is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and is sponsored by Burney Marsh & John Tucker, Bill & Virginia Anne Franklin Waters, Lawrence & Kathleen Smith, Drs. Patrick and Theresa Novotny, The Statesboro Regional Art Association, and Frazier’s Flowers. All our galleries are free to the public. Lisa D. Watson’s Avant Gardener: A Creative Exploration of Imperiled Species gallery exhibition will remain on display through May 5th.

Paint-N-Parties

We will have two Paint-N-Parties this month, May 12th and 26th at 6 p.m. No experience necessary! Just come and have fun with friends and your favorite drink! This month we will be painting some colorful watermelons. The cost to attend these events is $35 each and includes all the supplies needed. Our Paint-N-Parties are held at the Roxy Remley Center at 31 E. Vine St. and are catered and sponsored by Boro Takeout.

Bunyan Morris Art Your Way Workshops

One of our favorite artists and teachers, Bunyan Morris, will be holding two Art Your Way Workshops in May at our Roxie Remley center (31 E. Vine St.). Designed for emerging, as well as experienced adult artists, the content and projects in the course are presented in a friendly, informal style, giving each participant practical information about art and techniques. This approach will give the participants the confidence and the skills needed to comfortably discuss and create art. Beginning artists need not fear and advanced artists will find growth. Participants will provide their own materials and will work in the media of their choice. The cost for these workshops is $35. The first will be held May 13th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the second will be May 15th, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Try Your Hand at Clay Workshop

Want to try working with clay? No experience? No time to take an eight-week session? This hand-building clay class is designed for you! On the last Saturday of each month, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., join us for our Try Your Hand at Clay Workshop. This month (May 27th) we will be making a succulent wall pocket. Our fabulous instructor, Georgina Osuna-Diaz, will take you step-by-step through the process of creation. Any experience level is welcome! Registration is required. This workshop is for artists aged 16-plus. The cost is just $35.
