Beginning Friday, March 3, the Friends of the Library bookstore will be having a "Keeping it Green" discount book sale, which will run throughout the month of March on Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. The sale will be held in the building directly beside the bookstore, to the right (the old Maxway). Fill a bag for $2 or bring your own bag to fill for $1.

Pat Homer, of Friends of the Library said, "People have been so generous that we have to have a clearance to make room for more." The FOL "hopes to raise awareness about waste by discounting their overstock so our community can get more books and books can find more homes!"

Founded over 30 years ago, the Friends of the Library previously held book sales inside the Statesboro Regional Library as a way to raise money for the library. In the Fall of 2021, they opened their current book store downtown. Staffed by volunteers, the book store relies on donations from the public and also includes some excess from the Statesboro Regional Library. The bookstore carries a wide selection of books including children's and adult books, as well as cookbooks, nonfiction, audiobooks, and more.

Pat says Georgia Southern student volunteers have "really been the muscle behind this move" for the book sale. They moved most of the book boxes over to the sale building and said they will be volunteering every Friday this Semester. Homer could not be more appreciative of their help.

"The community has been wonderful in donating all the books, because this is where this revenue comes from," she said.

The proceeds from the sale go to the library for funding, including adult and children's programs.

Pat says, "Without funding from the Friends of the Library, many of these programs would not exist."

Over the years contributions from the FOL have enabled the library to get new sliding doors, furniture for the teen loft, and more---basically they supply whatever the state budget doesn't cover.

"Our goal is to provide a quality library for our community, and we hope people take advantage of everything the library has to offer," says Pat.

If you have been to the Statesboro Farmers Market on Saturday, you have most likely seen the FOL book table with a free book for children and Shari Barr, a FOL member that reads to the children. A special preview for the sale will be held for Friends of the Library members on Thursday, March 2, from 4 to 6 pm. If you are not a member or are a lapsed member, you may renew or join at the door and receive a free book tote.

The FOL volunteers are still unloading and setting up books, so get ready for a great sale!
