GSU Class Suspension

About an hour after Governor Brian Kemp held a press conference on Thursday afternoon in which he encouraged all educational facilities and daycare’s to review their current situation and consider closing for two weeks, the Board of Regents announced that all University System of Georgia institutions will temporarily suspend instruction for two weeks, which includes Georgia Southern University.

Governor Kemp stressed that his suggestion of schools and daycare’s closing for two weeks was not a mandate, and he would empower local school systems and daycare’s to make the decisions independently and would support whatever decision they made.

A campus wide email notified Faculty, Students and staff that Georgia Southern University would comply with the Board of Regents order and will temporarily suspend instruction for two weeks beginning Monday, March 16th.

This will give USG institutions an opportunity to test their business continuity plans and online instruction modules, and for state officials to continue to assess the current situation regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) in Georgia.
Georgia Southern Students begin spring break for one week beginning on Monday, March 16th.  Students who are currently on spring break are strongly encouraged not to return to campus until March 29th. Students on campus are asked to depart campus by close of business Friday, March 13, 2020, and to remain away from campus until March 29, 2020.  At this time, students are not being asked to move out of their dorms for the remainder of the semester.
For students who are unable to leave campus, Georgia Southern University will work to safely accommodate those students on campus.
Administrators were asked to activate their relevant business continuity plans and ensure the operation of online instruction should that become necessary.

Students, Faculty and Staff Travel Registration

All students, faculty, and staff, are encouraged to voluntarily register any upcoming travel plans for Spring Break or any other reason. They are being asked to log their travel through the Travel Registry link within the MyGS portal. This will allow Georgia Southern to communicate directly with travelers and to provide guidance to ensure that their safety is top priority if they have visited an area that is named an area of concern by the CDC. Currently, CDC recommends travelers should avoid nonessential travel to any country designated as a Warning Level 3.   A list is available at the following link: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html. As a reminder, anyone traveling to a country that is designated as a CDC Warning Level 3 must not return to any USG campus or facility for 14 days following their return.

The Board of Regents will issue further guidance as the situation warrants.
