Handgun found at Statesboro High; 16-year-old arrested

Statesboro Police arrested a 16-year-old student at Statesboro High School on Thursday after discovering a handgun during a planned safety search, authorities said.

Statesboro Police officers, along with K9 units from SPD’s Special Investigations team and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, conducted a planned school safety search at Statesboro High School on Thursday, September 4, in coordination with school administrators.

During the search, officers discovered a handgun in the possession of a 16-year-old male student.

The student was arrested and taken to a Regional Youth Detention Facility pending a Juvenile Court hearing. He faces charges of carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, a felony, and possession of a handgun by a person under 18.

Police say the investigation into how the student obtained the firearm is ongoing.
