As the ghosts and goblins emerge for fall festivals and trick-or-treating this Halloween on Monday, October 31 from 6 pm to 8 pm the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is providing tips to help ensure everyone has a safe, fun experience.

When it comes to costumes this Halloween, be sure all aspects are flame-resistant, including masks, wigs and beards.

Be weary of decorative contact lenses that can be purchased without a prescription. These may not fit properly and could cause scratches, sores, and other eye injuries.

Consider using reflective tape on costumes, bags, and accessories to increase visibility and safety while walking at dusk or dark. A flashlight or a glow stick is also a great way to ensure everyone can see you, but avoid using lit candles, luminaries or pumpkins to light your way.

Halloween can be an exciting time for young children. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep kids safe:

  • Always ensure they are accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child
  • Caution children against running out from between parked cars, or across yards
  • Examine treats for choking hazards before allowing them to be eaten

When trick-or-treating the DPH recommends visiting homes that have outdoor lights as a sign of welcome. And when hosting trick-or-treaters remove potential obstacles from your lawn, walkway, porch, and steps.

After collecting your Halloween goodies, ensure you inspect the candy and only eat factory-wrapped treats. If you have any doubt about the safety of a treat, throw it out. And don’t forget to brush your teeth once you’re done snacking.

Additionally, the DPH urges residents to skip the Halloween parties and activities if you are not feeling well. In addition to being the spooky season, it is flu season. DPH recommends everyone six months old and older get the flu vaccine as soon as possible.

Finally, the DPH recommends everyone six months old and older be up to date with COVID vaccination and booster shots. For more information about flu, COVID, and vaccinations click here.
