In early December, two Georgia Southern University entrepreneurship classes instructed by Dr. Steve Stewart donated money to two local nonprofits focused on sexual assault and domestic violence.

These students of the Parker College of Business donated $1,500 to The Teal House and Safe Haven.

“We have done something like this for about two years now,” Stewart said. “It gives the students hands-on, practical experience, while at the same time they get to help parts of their community.”

Lily Gray, Executive Director at The Teal House, said they were happy about the donations and that they would be used to help support their causes.

“We were extremely gracious to receive that money,” Gray said. “It’s going to be added to our lump sum to help out victims who have been impacted by sexual abuse in our community.”

The classes created and ran a business, and in twelve weeks, were responsible for making a profit. The money earned was to be donated to charities of the classes’ choice.

“I think it is wonderful that the students chose our organization,” Gray said, “I think it’s amazing that these students raised money with the intention of donating it. They brought about community awareness and helped their community almost blindly. They don’t see who it’s going to, but they were still willing to help provide resources to those who need it. It’s important that they helped both their community and the university itself.”

The money raised for the Teal House will go towards victims of sexual assault, benefiting the costs of recovery, therapy, medical necessities, follow-ups, and other health-related needs.

“The that was money given to us is enough to pay for two complete medical evaluations,” Gray said.
