“Alright, there we go!” (*Blows off the last bits of pollen*)

My Local Delights Box is FINALLY tidied, and ready for more excitement!

So...where to next? Hmm...

OH.

I KNOW!

Let’s stop by a local gem that’s secretly nestled on Gentilly Road.

I call it: the GREATEAST Greenway on Earth

because...I mean…

it is, folks.

(I hereby declare it so!)

So, let’s explore THE GREAT: “S&S Greenway Walking Trail!

Now.

Are you looking to go on a morning walk with your pup before work?

Or perhaps, you're looking to go on an afternoon bike-ride, because the weather’s just so amazing?

Or perchance, you’re hoping to stumble upon the love of your life, while taking an evening lap around this local strip?

No matter the occasion you’re looking for, I think you’ll find some success here on the S&S Greenway!

Now, for some background, “S&S” stands for Savannah & Statesboro Railway.

And according to the accompanying obelisk from the Bulloch County Historical Society:

“The path follows the roadbed of the Savannah & Statesboro Railway (S&S RY) which was completed in 1899. The railway was created through the interests of timbermen and turpentiners, as well as through the dreams of Statesboro citizens becoming a railway center. For 34 years, the S&S RY enabled residents to visit Savannah, or take excursions to Tybee.”

Now, how’s that for a history lesson!

Every day, tons of locals are walking on a beaten path that had previously connected thousands of our forebearers to different sites and localities. This trail--then railway--truly aided our predecessors in enjoying a more frequent and convenient mode of transportation.

The S&S Greenway Trail is a paved 2.75-mile walking/biking trail. The trailhead at Gentilly Road has restrooms, paved parking, and tons of informational panels for interested locals.

The S&S Greenway trail goes 12-feet-wide and goes eastward, crossing under the 301 Bypass. Then, it crosses Cawana Road and runs parallel to Railroad Bed Road, before ending at another trailhead, located at the intersection of Pretoria-Rushing and Burkhalter Roads.

Now, I stopped at this trail a few days ago and it is truly a local delight.

I was initially concerned with the 80-degree weather we were experiencing that day. (You know, that GEORGIA heat-and-humidity combo, which would have inevitably made my stroll a human hazard.)

However, I was pleasantly surprised with the over-hanging trees and surrounding brush that provided the necessary relief to what would have otherwise been a nightmare midday stroll!

Thank heavens!!!!!

So yes, I will be spending the next few days…(or maybe even weeks…) squeezing this S&S Greenway Trail into my Local Delights Box. It’s a local gem that must be treasured and secured!

Wish me luck, GC friends.

(…and send some spring water and handheld fans while you’re at it…)
