Engineering my future! GC Summer Intern Ja'Kori Cope shares another adventurous week

Week three and Grice Connect's summer intern Ja'Kori Cope has gained quite a following. His fans show up daily, cheering him on. Join him for this weeks highlights where he literally began "Engineering" his future. Ja'Kori's adventures are made possible through his participation in the City of Statesboro's Youth Connect Program.

Hello my loyal fans, or whatever the famous people address their following base as, it’s Kori back again with another fabulous and interesting week. Hope you enjoy reading how it went as much as I enjoyed experiencing it.

So this week was more of a future oriented week where mostly I did and was exposed to things that would be useful to me in the future.

First and foremost I cashed in my first check, I can say I was pretty thrilled to have fresh money hit my hands that I worked for in a real job setting. I can admit it was a feeling that I can not and will not forget.

Money, Money

What was great was that same day I created my first bank account at CORE Credit Union, a well known credit union.  Mr. DeWayne explained the importance of managing my money by saving some and not spending it all.

He actually recommended me to set up a bank account, deep down I believe he advised me to be good with money because he is on the Advisory Board of CORE, lol. But my grandma, Patricia Mosley, had an account with them also so I would say it was fairly easy to set up an account, thanks to the phenomenal staff.

"Stupid" Purchase

You wouldn’t believe what I had to spend my fresh earned cash on…. fixing my screen on my iPhone, luckily I got it done for a low, reasonable price of $108 after tax. Cellairis, shoutout to them also, only took approximately 10 minutes tops. (Which was almost one third of my first paycheck)

Even though Mr. DeWayne said I spent it on stupidity, I would say it was truly an accident how I was put into the position to even have to get it fixed.

GS Engineering School Tour

Now let’s get down to the real money maker, where dreams become reality, and the sky is your only limit. This Friday I was fortunate enough to have a exclusive or I would put it VIP tour of the Engineering side of Georgia Southern University. Which I was guided by the one and only Interim Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering, Dr. Rami Haddad, or how Mr. Grice would call it the “Big Dawg”.

Mr. Rami greeted us with an overall explanation of the engineering college options available on campus. Further explaining choices that I will need to make and career pathways currently available at my high school that were much more suited for each different area of engineering.

After breaking down each department, me and Mr. DeWayne were officially touring the campus, with our guide being Dr. Rami. He showed me a lot of cool things GS has to offer.  He informed me about all the technology available to help aid students and give them a feel of some equipment and technology they would most likely use on a real job site.

What was really fascinating and also really consuming to me was the Power Electronics.  Dr. Masoud Davari was kind enough to spare some time and tell us about some of the things he and his students do. Did you know that he has the ability to simulate large power grids to those similar to powering a whole college campus. Now that is something to think about right there.

Ending off with Another Great Week

Overall this week was a real eye opener for me, getting to witness and being exposed to the wonderful opportunities. I will use this information to set a standard in my classroom that this is where I want to be.  I must do everything in my power to make it here.

Closing out on this wonderful weekly report I would like to just thank Dr. Rami for inviting me and giving me this overall opportunity.  Because of him I will take this opportunity and use it as motivation to make it where I want to be in life. I also would like to think the graduate students that were present on the tour to fully let me in on their everyday role at GS as a student:

  • Anata Bijoy Bhadra
  • Jason Nawab

Thank you all everyone for reading and being part of my journey this summer.
