South Georgia Tormenta FC and the USL W League has announced the club’s 12-game schedule for the 2023 USL W League season. Tormenta FC will host six matches at Tormenta Stadium in 2023, including matches against newly added teams, Birmingham Legion SC and North Alabama SC.
"Tormenta FC is looking forward to another highly competitive USL W schedule in 2023,” Tormenta FC Head Coach Jim Robbins commented. “We are excited to welcome two new clubs to our division. The improved 16 team playoff format will allow more teams to experience everything that the USL W League has to offer. Our goal remains to compete for another South Central Division title in 2023 and to earn our place in the USL W National Championship match in late July."
South Georgia will kick off its title-defending season on the road at Southern Soccer Academy on May 14. South Georgia looks to harness an electric atmosphere for its home opener as the team welcomes the Legion SC on May 19 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The 2023 campaign marks the first full season Tormenta FC will play at Tormenta Stadium after opening its doors on Oct. 1, 2022.
Following its home opener, Tormenta FC will host a second consecutive home game welcoming Tennessee SC on May 22. South Georgia will look to defend its home after going undefeated in Statesboro in 2022.
Following two consecutive home games, Tormenta FC will make its longest away game stretch when Tormenta FC visits the Legion SC and Tennessee SC on June 7th and June 12th respectively.
South Georgia, the winner of the 2022 South Central Division, will welcome back fellow division rivals Southern Soccer Academy, Tennessee SC, South Carolina United FC, and the Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. The Legion SC and North Alabama SC are set to join the division and will look to compete against the reigning winners.
In three games, South Georgia outscored South Carolina United FC 11-2, as well as outscoring Tennessee SC 10-1 in two encounters. South Georgia are yet to defeat Southern Soccer Academy and the Chattanooga Red Wolves, who were the only team to defeat Tormenta FC’s USL W League team in 2022.
In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. Tormenta FC won its first-ever USL W League title in 2022 after defeating the Minnesota Aurora in front of 6,500 fans in Eagan, Minnesota.
Tormenta FC provides an opportunity for local and national players to develop and start their professional careers in Statesboro, Georgia. In just one year, Tormenta FC’s USL W League team has produced five professional players with Jenae Packard joining Emily Burke, Kelly Giddes, Abigail Wolf and Jodi Medina as the latest player to sign a contract in Europe.
