South Georgia Tormenta FC begins its 2023 USL League One preseason this Saturday, Feb. 11, at 4 p.m ET, when it takes on NCAA Division I side Georgia Southern University from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium. The two Statesboro sides look to get the teams’ first evaluations ahead of both of its respective 2023 seasons. With several new faces a part of Tormenta FC, Head Coach Ian Cameron will have an opportunity to build chemistry early in the season with the 10 returners and the new signings.

Tormenta FC looks to begin its preseason with a strong performance against the local collegiate side. South Georgia knows the significance of building a united team that is expected to accomplish several milestones in 2023. Against Georgia Southern, Cameron has an opportunity to roster several new faces and trialists currently competing for a spot on the League One roster. To note, Matheus Cassini and Jackson Khoury will be unavailable for Saturday’s preseason match.

South Georgia’s defensive unit will surely be one to watch on Saturday’s match. The center back partnership between Preston Kilwien and Jake Dengler will be seeing its first few minutes of playtime together. Kilwien brings USL Championship experience to the young defensive side, while Dengler looks to build on an superb first season with South Georgia and will look to be one of the top players in League One in 2023.

Competition for the right back position will also be something to watch out for, as first-year pros Nick Akoto and Collin Mocyunas know the importance of building internal competition between one another. The game against Georgia Southern will prove to be an opportunity for both players.

Georgia Southern competes in one of the best conferences in the nation. The Sun Belt Conference grants an opportunity for the Statesboro side to continue growing soccer alongside Tormenta FC for years to come. Georgia Southern comes into 2023 under new leadership. Newly announced Head Coach Lee Squires looks to build a team ready to compete against anyone in the nation. A strong challenge against Tormenta FC awaits them on Saturday. However, the team knows it has an opportunity to build trust and chemistry within each other. With a strong group of returners, Georgia Southern opens up its Spring season against the reigning USL League One champion and will hope to start 2023 in a positive way.

The yearly friendly between Tormenta FC and Georgia Southern continues to amplify the unity between both programs and the will to grow soccer in the 912 and surrounding areas.
