The South Georgia Showdown is coming to Statesboro as 2022 USL League One Champions South Georgia Tormenta FC take on the Savannah Clovers in the second round of the 109th edition of the U.S. Open Cup at 7:00 p.m. on April 3 at the beautiful Tormenta Stadium.
The iconic pairing marks the first time in history that the two professional teams go head-to-head. This second-round battle will be a spectacle of skill, passion, and Lowcountry pride from the two teams. Fans should come ready to cheer and support the team of their choice for the match.
“Both teams will be desperate to win, and both arrive with belief. Both institutions have people behind them that have dared to grow and develop something in this area that elevates youth academies, gives young professionals opportunities, and the community entertainment.” Head Coach Ian Cameron explained. “Let’s celebrate what we’re both working on while competing in a winner-take-all, survive, and advance format competition. What more do you want from an early cup draw?”
The South Georgia Showdown event will showcase the two teams playing in the U.S. Open Cup while also elevating the presence of soccer in the South Georgia area as a whole. Local high school and middle school soccer teams and youth academies are especially invited to watch this electrifying matchup.
South Georgia Tormenta FC comes into this fierce match-up with a 2-1-1 (W-L-D) record for the 2024 season. The Savannah Clovers come with a 1-0-0 (W-L-D) record. The two formidable opponents will play this 90-minute match to determine who will continue on to round three of the 109th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
South Georgia Tormenta FC was announced as the first founding member of the United Soccer League (USL) League One in 2019. In 2022, the Savannah Clovers were accepted into the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA). Fans should expect food, a roaring crowd, and a vibrant 21+ section with a $2 beer special.
