The Georgia Southern softball team fell in extras to tenth-seeded Marshall on Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
Marshall (25-27) scored two runs in the top of the eleventh inning to secure the victory and move on to round two for a matchup with #2 Texas State.
Georgia Southern (30-21) struck first in the bottom half of the second to take an early 1-0 lead when freshman Kyla Maxwell drove in her seventh run of the season to plate pinch runner Brooke Kell.
The Eagles doubled its lead in the fourth when Marshall relief pitcher Savannah Rice threw a wild pitch to score Delanie Thames who led off the inning with a walk.
Marshall responded in the fifth after two singles and a four-pitch walk to load the bases, Destiny Washington recorded a single up the middle to cut into the lead, 2-1 with no outs. Two outs at the plate and a big strikeout from relief pitcher Anslie Pettit ended the threat.
The Thundering Herd evened the score 2-2 in the sixth frame when Reagan Glanz recorded an RBI-single. After seven complete innings, the score remained tied, and the game headed to extras.
The Eagles looked to secure the victory in the eighth but a groundout to third ended the scoring opportunity.
Starting pitcher Alana Barnard tossed four complete innings allowing one run on four hits and added a strikeout. In relief, Anslie Pettit tossed two complete innings allowing a run on two hits and picked up two strikeouts. Morgan Kendrick suffered the loss pitching 4.1 innings allowing two runs on two hits.
Katie Perkins led the offense going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Emma Davis, Maxwell, and Thames recorded a hit each.
