SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State quarterback TJ Finley threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Bobcats to a 45-24 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Texas State jumped out to an early lead on five plays in the opening drive. DeAndre Buchannon returned the kickoff 80 yards to set up a 29-yard field goal by Michael Lantz for an early 7-3 score. The Bobcats moved right back down the field, but a bad snap was recovered by Isaac Walker to thwart the drive. Jalen White took it to the house from 39-yards out on third and 15 to give the Eagles a 10-7 lead.
Texas State scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, two on passes from Finley and a 16-yard run from the signal caller, and converted a field goal after an Eagle turnover to take a 31-10 lead into the locker room.
The Bobcat offense continued into the second half with two more touchdowns to stretch the lead to 35 points. The Eagles continued to fight as Davis Brin hit tight end Jjay Mcafee on a 32-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter to break a 38-0 run by the Bobcats. Midway through the fourth quarter, White punched it in from 3 yards out to cut into the lead.
White led the offense with 159 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, recording his third-straight 100-yard game. Three Eagles posted double-digit tackle numbers.
