Alton Gene Sheffield, 84, entered into rest on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Born in Sylvania Georgia, Gene was the oldest son of Charlie Brooks Sheffield (1971) and Virginia Moore Sheffield Poythress (2011). He is preceded in death by both parents, step father Troy William Poythress (2001), sister Barbara Sheffield Hinson (2017), brother Donald Brooks Sheffield (2021), and son Bobby Dewayne Sheffield (1991). Gene is survived by his loving wife of 64 years of marriage, Maxine Lee Sheffield, daughter Lagina Sheffield Evans, son and partner Randall Sheffield and David Potts, granddaughter and husband Brandy and Eric Thompson, grandson and wife Blake and Paige Evans. Gene adored his two great grand girls Mia and Eve Thompson and was excited for a third great grand due in Sept 2025. Gene treasured his entire family and was very close to his nieces, nephews, brother-in-law and sister-in-law.
Growing up in Screven County, Gene Sheffield graduated from high school in 1959 and then achieved a master diesel mechanic certification from Georgia Southwestern Institute in Americus, Georgia. Gene worked at the Savannah Ports for several years before returning to Sylvania to start G&M Transport. In 1995, he purchased Screven Tire Company where he enjoyed serving the community. After being retired less than a year, he found himself back at the tire store working part time two days or so per week.
Gene Sheffield was an active member and Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Sylvania. He was elected and served on the Sylvania City Council for 13 years and became a liaison with the Municipal Electricity Authority of Georgia (MEAG).
Gene is remembered by many as a true friend and die-hard Georgia Bulldog fan.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, 2025 in the Family Life Center at 10:00 AM.
Funeral service will follow at 11:00 in the chapel of the First Baptist Church of Sylvania.
Interment will be in the Screven County Memorial Cemetery.
