Mai Lan Nguyen's farewell to Orchid: A decade of culinary excellence and community love

Nguyen moved to the United States in 1996 and moved to Statesboro in 1997. Her family opened Nikko back then, and she later opened Orchid in 2013. The restaurant will soon transition to new ownership, but here she shares memories of the decade she has spent in the restaurant with her own children and members of the Statesboro community.

Simone James Quietly Making Noise In 2023-24

As a freshman for the Eagles, Simone ended up starting 17 of 21 games in 2020-21, averaging 6.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while also collecting 22 steals. As a sophomore, those numbers increased as she started 22 of 28 games, while also getting the chance to go back to San Diego and play a couple of games in front of her high school friends and family.

Governor Brian P. Kemp announced a state employee retention pay supplement of $1,000 for each of the roughly 112,000 state employees and 196,000 educators and school support staff across the state.

State releases 2023 CCRPI report; See Bulloch scores

Bulloch County outperformed the state in the majority of the CCRPI’s component areas for each grade segment - elementary, middle, and high schools. The school district significantly outperformed the state in the Closing the Gap component. Also, Bulloch County’s four-year graduation rate of 89.10% is higher than the state’s rate of 84.9%. Brooklet Elementary received Distinguished School status.

For roughly a decade, employees of Ag South in Statesboro have been quietly meeting the needs of senior citizens in the community every December as part of their Santa for a Senior tradition. This year is no different, and though the tags have all been pulled, you can still make a difference by contacting nursing homes and senior centers in your area.
