Senior Moment | SPLASH into a new fitness routine

We all know about visiting the Splash in the Boro waterpark during the summer for fun in the sun. But did you know they offer aquatic and exercise programs year-round in their heated pools? Michele visited Splash to hear more about their low impact, warm water options that are great for seniors -- or anyone!

Hey everyone! If I had an option where you could work out, tone-up, make friends, get vitamin D, and much more, all at the same time -- wouldn't that be amazing? Well, an opportunity just like that is available to you right here in Statesboro! The program I am about to share is definitely of an extraordinary variety. The cost, the personalized care, and follow-up with this aquatic team is beyond measure.

Splash in the Boro is two parts: a Family Waterpark, with exciting rides and activities for all ages, and an Aquatic Center, where swimming, diving lessons, arthritis therapy, and aerobic classes are available, just to mention a few. An average of 1,000 people a month come to the Aquatic pool, and when the Waterpark is open (seasonal), 150,000 guests visit annually.

The Splash Aquatics & Fitness Center has a variety of water programs. You can choose what is best for you and can move to different classes as you prefer. The options are as follows:

  • Lap and Exercise Swim
  • Diving Lessons
  • Deep Aquafit: Jogging, bicycling, challenging aerobic workout; Focuses on mobility and core strengths
  • Aqua Fit: Low impact water aerobics
  • Aqua Funk: Low impact water dancing and aerobics; Zumba -- get your groove on!
  • Aqua Cycle: Low impact water cycling
  • Arthritis Therapy: Great for arthritis, surgery recovery, and joint replacements

"Who is the INSTRUCTOR?" you might ask. Beth Sands is your answer. She started at Splash in 2004 as a patron and became an instructor in 2006. Once asked ‘What is so great about ‘Splash?’ she replied, "The people, staff, and patrons. I wish everyone could wake up each morning excited and loving the job they're headed to, as much as I love mine. A cordial introduction becomes a friendship. The friendships become a relationship, full of fun, love, and accountability. It's not just about the lap swim or class you're taking, it's about the bond you build with the others. They keep you coming back. The fact that your joints and muscles feel better when you leave is just a beautiful perk.”

Well, that sums it up folks, from the ‘master instructor’ herself!

Beth explains, “Being in a comfortable, safe, and clean environment surrounded by caring individuals is unique. Feel better, get well, and build relationships. That's what Splash is about.”

Now you say, 'I haven't worn a bathing suit in years,' or 'my hair will get wet' or 'what will people think when they see me?' Swimsuits are NO longer an issue. "Aqua wear" (the new word for swimwear) has changed from the last century. Now people wear water tights, swim shorts, long and short sleeve tops, as well as suits for better sun protection. In the majority of the exercises, the water level is mid-chest -- perfectly modest and comfortable.

“So no more negatives!” says Sands.

Plus the Aquatic Center has heated bath houses, where you can quickly shower and go on with your errands, coffee-time, or work.

Alex Estrada, Aquatic Division Manager, started with Splash in 2016. Estrada has made it his professional goal to be a ‘true service to the community.’ He said, “Splash provides amazing programs led by such a wide array of incredible individuals in the operations of the water park. I get the privilege of working alongside them with one ultimate goal of pouring back into our town, all while staying healthy and maintaining an active lifestyle. It brings me real joy to know I am part of this and I get to give back all while helping so many people make memories that they will have for a lifetime."

Estrada has been recognized by his peers as well as the Splash aquatic fitness members. (They're especially grateful for him keeping the aquatic pool at a nice 90 degrees!)

Estrada’s ‘HEART stays on it,’ he says, as his desire is to have the BEST facility for all. He and Sands have created an excellent partnership. They are ‘Accountability Buddies’ and shared with me that being together at Splash is ‘like working in a resort in Bulloch County.’ Love it!!

Aquatic program members range in age from 20s to 80s, so there is truly something for everyone there.

With a yearly membership, you can enjoy UNLIMITED swims and classes. Did I mention there is NO time limit on your pool activities? In other words, you can stay after classes (or not even attend a class) and just enjoy the 90 degree pool temp in the aquatic pool and 83-84 degrees in the lap pool.

"This is a very small investment considering the other aquatic programs' cost in the surrounding counties,” added Estrada.

For more information, contact Alex Estrada, Aquatic Division Manager, at 912-489-9089. You can get ready to put on your suit to refuel + recharge! It's time to join this fun, relationship-based team of ‘Get Better and Feel Better Folks.’ Both Estrada and Sands shared, “It is a privilege to help you attain your health goals at the ‘best kept secret’ in Bulloch County!"
