Willingway founding family members Dr. Al and Jane Mooney hospitalized in Charleston after crash

Statesboro native and Willingway Hospital founding family member Dr. Al Mooney and his wife Jane remain hospitalized in Charleston after a freak car accident.

Statesboro native Dr. Al Mooney and his wife Jane have been hospitalized in Charleston, S.C. after a freak accident.  While driving down an oak-lined avenue on Johns Island, SC, a massive tree branch fell and landed on their vehicle, crushing it.

According to the St. Johns Fire District in Johns Island, S.C. at approximately 4:40 PM Thursday, July 6, 2023  two vehicles were involved in a crash with a 3' diameter tree branch that fell in the roadway on Bohicket Road. One of the vehicles was the Mooney's.

Units with Charleston Fire Department, Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad, and Charleston County EMS responded. CFD Engine 117 and St Johns Ladder 707 began extrication of two patients who were transported to Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Emergency Department in downtown Charleston.

Their condition at the time of the accident was serious but both are expected to recover.

Willingway Hospital connection

Dr. Al Mooney's parents, Dr. John and Dot Mooney, founded Willingway Hospital in Statesboro. Dr. Al Mooney worked in the hospital for many years and also has been an incredible pioneer in addiction medicine.  He is the author of The Recovery Book.

The Mooney's are known for their compassion, kindness and love for so many in the recovery community and the Statesboro community as a whole.
