Update 4/12/24: Due to unforeseen power outages on the campus of Statesboro High School, all on-campus activities for the weekend have been canceled, including the Walk at Womack. Please check back for a new date, if rescheduled.

The Statesboro High School National Honor Society (NHS) will host its 4th annual Walk at Womack on the Womack Field track at SHS this spring.

This walk is a multi-purpose event. It will offer a FREE educational expo for community members to learn about ways to live with or help those living with a movement disorder such as Parkinson's disease, and it will also serve as a fundraiser for the Parkinson's Foundation.

This year, representatives from the following agencies will be there to answer questions from the community:

  • National Seating and Mobility
  • Abide Home Care
  • Gentiva Hospice
  • Oasis Senior Advisors
  • Department of Nutrition at GSU
  • St Joseph's/Candler Department of Neurosciences
  • Parkinson's Foundation

This event will feature vendors with freebies, activities, music, and a chance to walk the track while honoring those affected by Parkinson's disease. A special attraction this year will be demonstrations of Martial Arts and Tai Chi from Statesboro Martial Arts and Dr. Li Li.

Shannon Anderson, Media Specialist at Statesboro High School and NHS advisor, shared, “We have raised a little over $6,000 of our $10,000 goal. Although it is too late to be added to the back of the T-shirt, businesses and individuals can still donate to the cause through this link or with an SHS NHS member.”

The Walk at Womack is FREE to attend, but donations are encouraged and appreciated. Anyone donating $25 or more will receive a free t-shirt while supplies last. Registration is available online.

“This event is very near and dear to many hearts within the NHS, as several members have loved ones affected by Parkinson's disease,” Anderson shared. "It's truly personal for me. My grandpa dealt with it for many years, and my uncle and I fight the disease daily."

Local organizations or businesses that have resources or information for those fighting Parkinson's disease and would like to participate in the community expo should contact Shannon Anderson at [email protected].
