The Statesboro Farmers Market kicked off its season on Saturday, April 6, 2024, with a bustling crowd and vibrant energy on its third year in the new dedicated space. Boasting its growth, the market welcomed 64 vendors, a diverse mix comprising 14 farmers, 20 food vendors, 26 artisans, and four educational exhibitors, showcasing the community's commitment to supporting local commerce and sustainability.

Families, friends, and furry companions alike came together to fill the market space, enjoying the sunny weather and the range of offerings available. The atmosphere was described as both warm and busy, with smiling faces and wagging tails adding to the cheerful ambiance.

Some students shared with Grice Connect that this was their first year in Statesboro and they were excited to see such an extensive market and to have an opportunity to engage with the community in a different capacity. They continued, that they hope it opens the door for them to volunteer somewhere and learn more about growing their own food.

Among the sea of vendors, local favorites like Humble Bumble Bee Farm, Pour Robbins, Three Tree Coffee Rosters, and WilMor Flowers drew sizable crowds.

Sue Lee of Exquisite Lee Designed, known for her detailed wooden designs, highlighted the sense of connection fostered at the market, emphasizing the importance of community support for local artisans.

Lee expressed delight at the bustling turnout, remarking, "It’s wonderful to see all of these people come out and be together and support one another. You meet new faces and make new friends. I’m definitely looking forward to this market season."

Returning vendors, like BetterFresh Farms, seized the opportunity to connect with patrons on a deeper level. Reflecting on the bustling opening day, Grant Anderson, founder and farmer, remarked, "Everyone’s excited, and people are curious and asking questions. It’s a prime opportunity to engage with individuals about our mission. We normally work directly with restaurants so being able to talk with the community is fun for us."

BetterFresh Farms, an advocate for sustainable agriculture, believes one highlight of tabling is the opportunity to impart knowledge about their farming practices, nurturing meaningful connections within the community.

Survival Kneads mother and son duo, Estefany and Julian

Also returning for their second year, Survival Kneads, is a new small start-up business ran by a mother and son duo, Estefany and Julian. They offer fresh bread and handmade paracord bracelets, and began tabling during the last half of the year during the 2023 market season.

They wanted to try it out and loved doing it and being immersed in the community of Statesboro since they just moved to the city about 2-3 years ago. She says her son is the inspiration and it gives them a chance to work together.

Julian serves as both inspiration and collaborator since he is the one crafting survival bracelets that incorporate a compass, whistle, flint fire starter, and more, honoring Julian's grandfather, a seasoned sailor and avid enthusiast of such tools.

Colby, the creative mind behind Co-Create with Colby

Colby, the creative mind behind Co-Create with Colby, brought her unique wire jewelry designs to the market once again, radiating enthusiasm for the vibrant atmosphere.

Brought to Statesboro in 2015 to attend Georgia Southern University, Colby created her business in 2020 in the midst of COVID. With a warm smile, she declared, "Kick-off day is unequivocally my favorite day of the year."

Colby, who balances her roles as a survivor advocate and artisan, finds solace in the therapeutic nature of her craft. "Creating wire jewelry has been a form of self-care for me," she shared. "It's incredible to see how it has positively impacted my mental well-being."

The Hazels

The Hazels, quickly becoming beloved figures within the local farming community, reflected on their longstanding journey at the market. "We're immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our patrons," they expressed warmly.

With years of experience under their belt, they kindly reminisced about the enduring relationships forged over time. "It's incredible to see familiar faces return each season, witnessing the growth of their families and vice versa.” The Hazel’s daughter, Anastasia, had her very own mini booth across the way from her parents.

Amidst the festive atmosphere, families soaked up the sun, enjoying the outdoor seating and photo frame created by Mudita Events.

Pictured here, Jolie Mayo, a Georgia Southern University alumna and self-proclaimed Grice Connect fan, chose the market as the perfect setting to celebrate her birthday alongside her daughter, Anna Mayo, and friend Erin Ballard.

Mayo shared about her years at GS, saying that she was a student when they had the national championships here and recalled when the changed from Georgia Southern College to Georgia Southern University.

Anna, Mayo’s daughter, stated, "We absolutely adore the Statesboro Farmers Market! There’s so much to discover, and I genuinely relish supporting local businesses." Meanwhile, Erin, also a GS student, has aspirations of becoming a future vendor for crochet items, and eagerly anticipated showcasing her craft.
