The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro recently hosted its community blood drive event in partnership with the American Red Cross. The event took place on Friday, June 2nd, from 12pm-5pm at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds Community Building.

The service organization stood on the mantra “Save a Life. Donate Blood.” as it looked to garner participation and blood donations from eligible local citizens.

The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro hosts two community blood drives annually. The first community blood drive was held on Friday, January 27th, and this past Friday's blood drive was the second.

In speaking with Martha Ross, the Blood Program Leader for the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro, she had this summary to give on June 2nd's blood drive:

“We do our community blood drives as a civic outreach to our local community. In keeping abreast of the American Red Cross’s regular updates, there is always a dire need for blood. For our June 2nd blood drive today, we have filled 28 of 53 slots for people who have signed up to donate blood. Our goal for today was to gain 25 units of blood. We have had a few deferrals; however, we remain optimistic that we can provide a worthwhile contribution to the American Red Cross.”

Common emergency situations for which blood may be needed are accidents, illnesses, surgeries, and blood transfusions. So it remains vital to have ongoing community blood drives for maintaining the collective community blood supply.

Ross has many thanks to give on behalf of the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro for the success of the community blood drive event.

“We would like to thank all our donors and participants who contributed to the success of our community blood drives this year," she said. "Our community donors make our blood drives successful.”
