Last weekend the Wreaths Across American team made a visit to Statesboro to educate our community about their goal of "never forgetting" American soldiers who have died across the globe.  In the past, Bulloch County soldiers have not been included in this massive effort to honor our countries heroes.

The U.S. Military Vets M/C GA8 Statesboro Blues Chapter along with the American Legion Dextor Allen Post 90 in Statesboro hopes to change that this year.

They are asking citizens to support their effort by purchasing a wreath to be placed on a Bulloch Veteran's grave for $17 each or five wreaths for $85.  You can allow the wreaths to be placed on a Veterans grave site or come to the Brooklet City Cemetery on December 16th to pick up your wreaths and place it on your loved ones grave.

CLICK HERE to purchase wreaths.  Please make sure Brooklet City Cemetery is selected as the location you are supporting.

A ceremony will be held at Brooklet City Cemetery at 12 noon on National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023.  At a minimum they hope to cover all the Veteran's graves at the Brooklet City Cemetery.

Captain Obvious (Zachery Davis) with the U.S. Military Vets M/C GA8 Statesboro Blues Chapter is kicking the first Wreathes Across America placement this year in Brooklet, and hopefully in the years to come, local businesses will support the cause and all 2,500+ veterans' graves in Bulloch County will one day have a wreath placed yearly.”

Bobby Godwin, Junior Vice Commander Service Officer of the American Legion Post 90 said, “We were honored to host the ‘Wreaths Across America’ mobile education exhibit. It falls in line with our Americanism pillar of the American Legion. These words are fundamental in showing the Next Generation the Oaths that veterans took when they entered the United States military and honor of the sacrifices that were made."

If your company or organization wants to help with wreathe placement please contact Bobby Godwin at [email protected] or 912-681-6262 or Zackery Davis at [email protected] or 912-531-5777.

WE NEED YOU .. to say THANK YOU to our American Heroes!

What a wonderful fall day to visit the ‘Wreaths Across America’ fully decorated ‘Mobile Exhibit’ on Saturday. The exhibit was equipped with pictures, posters, awards, and a video presentation at the American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 in Statesboro. (This legion was named after Dexter Allen, the first veteran from Bulloch County killed in WW1 -- 1919.)

Stephan Tatum, the ’Wreaths Across America’ Ambassador traveling with the exhibit, was fully prepared to share, answer questions, and direct the visitors through the whys? and wherefores? of this non-profit organization. Stephan awarded some of the vets or families pins and medallions for serving and offered the organization's appreciation.

This entity started in 1992 as one man's annual gift to our veterans, inspired a legion of volunteers, and then gave rise to the ‘Wreaths Across America’ of today. This is how the story goes….

The Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine, had a surplus of wreaths at the end of the Christmas holiday season that year. Recalling a boyhood trip to Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, company founder Morrill Worcester donated 5,000 wreaths (wow!) to the cemetery to honor the cemetery's dead, with the help of volunteers and a local trucking company. This was the early beginnings.

By 2021, nearly 2.4 million volunteer wreaths were placed at more than 3,100 participating locations. More than 2 million volunteers nationwide joined in these efforts. ‘National Wreaths Across America Day’ is held annually on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month of December.

This year, National Wreaths Across America Day will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023.
