Mill Creek Elementary counselor teaches students about Old Glory

Mill Creek Elementary has earned a Flag Certificate from Bulloch County's Sons of the American Revolution

At schools like Mill Creek Elementary in Statesboro, the American flag is raised each weekday and it provides an opportunity for students to learn about patriotism.

"I'm in charge of the safety patrol at our school, and one of the students' duties is to raise and lower the flag in front of the school each day," said Dawn Beck, a counselor at Mill Creek Elementary.

Beck has taught the school's fourth and fifth-grade classes about the flag for more than 10 years.

"We learn why respect for the flag is important and how to properly fold and present a flag. The children seem very interested in learning about flag protocol,” she said.

About 150 students go through Beck's flag lessons each year. During her career more than 1,500 children have learned proper flag etiquette.

This school year, Bulloch County's Mill Creek Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) presented a Flag Certificate to Mill Creek Elementary and Beck.

“Beck instills the reverence so important to our nation's colors and brings great credit to herself, Mill Creek Elementary School, Bulloch County, our state and nation," said Randy Jones, president of the Mill Creek SAR Chapter. "The Georgia Society and our SAR chapter are proud to acknowledge a local educator and patriot."

This is an honor given by the chapter to individuals, companies, and government agencies who fly the U.S. flag for patriotic purposes.
