Members of Ferst Community Action Teams gathered for a summit at Southern Crescent Technical College in Griffin, GA, last year.

Ferst Readers of Bulloch County will host a new volunteer information meeting at the Statesboro-Bulloch County Library on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at 5:30pm. Their regular Community Action Team meeting will follow at 6:15pm.

Ferst Readers addresses one of the most basic issues of childhood literacy: ensuring the availability of quality books in the home so that parents can read to their child.

After years of watching our Ferst Readers program grow, we have seen overall school test scores positively impacted when a county has greater than 50% of its children enrolled in the program and has been operating 5 years or more. We have also seen from recent studies, that Ferst Readers contributes to "leveling" the playing field for children who, without the benefit of this program, might otherwise enter school up to two years behind their peers. --Ferst Readers

Ferst Readers is a non-profit organization that promotes the development of early childhood literacy skills in children from birth to age 5 by providing developmentally appropriate books and literacy support materials to children and their families. Every child enrolled in the Ferst Readers program receives a book a month mailed directly to their home until their fifth birthday at no cost.

Ferst Readers of Bulloch County has provided more than 85,000 books to children in our community since its Community Action Team was formed in 2013.

Through the generosity of individuals, local organizations, and businesses, Ferst continues to raise funds needed to maintain the Ferst Readers program in Statesboro.
