Copper Beech Statesboro released the following statement today, following Tuesday's evening's shooting that injured a Statesboro police officer responding to a call regarding vehicle break-ins at the complex.

The ownership and management of Copper Beech Statesboro are disturbed and saddened over the incident that occurred within the grounds of our community during the late afternoon on April 16, 2024, in which a police officer was injured.

Police have shared that one male suspect (determined not to be a resident of our community) was apparently attempting to break into one or more vehicles. When the responding police officer attempted to engage in conversation with the suspect, the suspect shot at the officer and the officer returned fire. The suspect was later apprehended and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and we are told he is currently in the Bulloch County Jail. We are informed that the police officer remains hospitalized with serious injuries. We are praying for him and his family.

Police have informed us they do not believe there is a continuing danger. Based on public reports, it appears that Statesboro and the surrounding areas have been experiencing vehicle break-ins in other apartment complexes and at private homes.

We live and work here and are shaken by this incident along with our residents. We deeply appreciate the risk and sacrifice that our first responders undertake to keep us safe, and we hope for the speedy recovery of the fallen officer. We will support all of our residents who are traumatized by this senseless violence.

The safety and security of our residents remain our highest priorities. Copper Beech Statesboro is a private off-campus community, primarily serving students from Georgia Southern University. We complete a criminal background check on every applicant and have zero tolerance for violence or criminal behavior. Firearms are prohibited in our community. Our professional management team is local and available 24/7 to respond to emergencies and assist residents. We are fully cooperating with law enforcement to help in any way possible, while maintaining and reviewing our security measures.
