Driving down Parker Avenue within the city limits of downtown Brooklet in late November evokes all of the hometown feelings that make us content to be a part of a small community. The various festive decorations adorn the lampposts and shrubbery and culminate with a verdant live tree nestled in the town’s gazebo.
Ellen Perkins, president of the Brooklet Community Development Association, along with 11 faithful volunteers, lovingly adorn the downtown with Christmas decor each year. This dedicated group also organizes the Brooklet Peanut Festival every year.
“The point of the Peanut Festival Committee was to beautify downtown Brooklet,” Perkins says. “So we go all out and we decorate the gazebo and the light poles and some of the bushes, and we just make it look like Christmas.”
This year, in addition to the ceremonial lighting of the Brooklet Christmas tree, local residents can look forward to speeches from outgoing Mayor Jo Grooms and Nicky Gwinnett, Brooklet’s incoming mayor. Performances will include the Little Bethel Baptist Choir, Southern Dance Academy, BES Choir, Brooklet Methodist Children’s Choir, SEBHS Band, SEBHS Chorus, and SEBMS Chorus. Landmark Holiness Church will reenact the Christmas story, and the pastors of Brooklet First Baptist as well as Brooklet Primitive Baptist will say a few words.
The festivities begin Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 6:00 PM on Parker Avenue in downtown Brooklet.
