Bringing People Together: Chess and pizza for the win

The Statesboro-Bulloch Library, in conjunction with the Statesboro Police Department, hosts a monthly evening out for residents in our community. The unlikely pairing? Chess and pizza. The result? Endless hours of fun, food, and new friends!

Chess and Pizza occurs every fourth Wednesday of the month. Holiday Pizza provides a comfortable atmosphere, delicious pizza, and soft drinks, which are available to all participants free of charge. The only caveat: one should be ready and willing to sit down across from an unknown opponent in the ultimate strategy game: chess.

Statesboro Police Chief Mike Broadhead and the Statesboro Police Department partnered with Statesboro-Bulloch Library to make this innovative idea a reality. Any level of chess player is welcome to participate from beginner to afficionado.

Nearly every table is adorned with a chess board and flanked by two eager players who wish to engage in a tabletop battle. Chess players munch on bottomless plates of pizza as they contemplate their next move and anticipate the moves of their counterparts.

One of the most heart-warming and memorable parts of this event are the pairings of people who sit down as strangers and part as friends; however, not all who compete are strangers. Fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, and friends comprise the duos as well, all vying to be grandmasters in their own right. This friendly, welcoming space allows for novices to learn and connoisseurs to hone their skills.
