Municipal qualifying ends with only Statesboro Mayor and Statesboro Council District 1 drawing opposition

Qualifying has closed for the November municipal elections with only Statesboro Mayor and Statesboro City Council District 1 drawing opposition. Brooklet and Portal will have one new council member. Both are unopposed. All incumbents are returning to Register unopposed.

With municipal qualifying for City of Statesboro, City of Brooklet, Town of Portal, and Town of Register have now closed.  Statesboro Mayor and Statesboro Council District 1 both drew opposition and will be decided on November 4, 2025.  Even though Brooklet and Portal will see one new council member each, they are both running unopposed in open seats.   All three incumbents will return in Register without opposition.


City of Statesboro | Office of Mayor & City Council District 1 & 4 Seats

Qualifying opened Monday, August 18, 2025 at 8:30am and is now closed.

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for mayor, as reported at the end of the day today, August 22:

  • Jonathan McCollar (Incumbent)
  • Raymond Harris, Sr.

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for City Council District 1, as reported at the end of the day today, August 22:

  • Tangie Johnson (Incumbent)
  • John Grotheer

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for City Council District 4, as reported at the end of the day today, August 22:

  • John Riggs (Incumbent)

Candidates who wish to qualify for one of these offices must file their notice of candidacy with the Election Superintendent for Qualifying at Statesboro City Hall within the qualifying period. The qualifying fee to run for mayor is $560, while the fee for the City Council seats is $330.

The City of Statesboro operates under the Council-Manager form of government, established by a 1999 Charter amendment. The Mayor is elected at large while the five council members are elected by district. A map of the council districts is available here. All elections are non-partisan, and terms are for four years with three of the members elected every two years.

City of Brooklet | Council Posts 3, 4, and 5

Qualifying opened Monday, August 18, 2025 at 8:30am and is now closed.

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for Council Post 3 at the end of the day today, August 22:

  • Rebecca Kelly (Incumbent)

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for Council Post 4 at the end of the day today, August 22:

  • Philip Oliver (Coach Oliver) - will replace James Harrison who did not seek re-election.

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for Council Post 5 at the end of the day today, August 22:

  • Sheila Wentz (Incumbent)

The fee to qualify for these seats in Brooklet is $54. All offices will be elected to a four-year term, beginning January 1, 2026, and ending December 31, 2030.

Town of Portal | Council Posts 1, 3, and 4

The Town of Portal will be electing three City Council Members in the Municipal General Election on November 4, 2025. In order to qualify for the City Council, a candidate must live inside the city limits (6 months) of Portal and be a (Bulloch County Portal Precinct) registered voter.

Anyone wishing to qualify for this office should file their Notice of Candidacy and pay their qualifying fees to the City Qualifying Clerk for the election at the Portal City Hall at 27209 Hwy 80 W., Portal, Georgia 30450.

Qualifying began Monday, August 18, 2025 and is now closed.

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for Council Seat Post 1 end of the day today, August 22:

  • Patricia Goodman - will replace Sissy Carter who did not seek re-election.

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for Council Seat Post 3 end of the day today, August 22:

  • Hope Woods (Incumbent)

Below is the list of citizens who have qualified to run for Council Seat Post 4 end of the day today, August 22:

  • Roger Davis (Incumbent)

Town of Register

The Town of Register will hold elections for the office of mayor and Town Council Seats 1 and 2. Qualifying opened Tuesday, August 19, and is now closed. The fee to qualify for mayor is $25, and the fee to qualify for the council seats is $15.

Register reports that no challengers have qualified to run against the incumbents.  Qualifying has closed with no opposition, so there will be no election in November for the Town of Register.

  • Donny Roberts (Incumbent) - Mayor
  • Emund Brannen (Incumbent) - Council Seat 1
  • Brittany Brannen (Incumbent) - Council Seat 2
