Bulloch County prepares to celebrate Memorial Day this weekend. Even though the actually Memorial Day holiday is on Monday, May 31, our community has already began tributes to the men and women who gave all for our freedom.

Thursday morning members of the Statesboro Fire Department set 102 crosses on the Bulloch County Courthouse square. Each cross has the soldiers name and the war they fought in. The Statesboro Fire Department built the crosses, maintain and store the crosses, in addition to installing them each year on the Bulloch County Court House lawn on Memorial Day weekend and again on Veterans Day weekend.

Friday Memorial Events, May 28

Around 10 AM on Friday, May 28, members of the American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 along with volunteers will place a wreath at the Vietnam Veterans monument in Triangle park at the intersection of East Main and Savannah Avenue. The monument is behind the fountain.

The veterans will then walk up the street to place a second wreath at the Flame of Freedom which is an eternal flame in front of Statesboro City Hall.

Also on Friday, Veterans and members of the American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 will be assisted by local Boy Scouts in placing small American flags on the Veterans graves in Statesboro and Bulloch County cemeteries. They are preparing to place between 2,500 and 3,000 flags on the grave sites.

Veterans Day Ceremony Monday, May 31

On Veterans Day, Monday, May 31 at 11 AM Lonnie Ellis, incoming Commander of the American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90 will lead a brief wreath placement ceremony at the large Veterans of All Wars Memorial Monument in front of the Bulloch County Judicial Annex, located at 20 Siebald Street.

This brief ceremony will replace the normal ceremony held annually inside the Averitt Center for the Arts, Emma Kelly Theater.

Ellis and other leaders of Post 90 felt this would be the safest way to hold a Memorial Day ceremony.

The ceremony will include:

  • Bulloch Sheriff's Honor Guard assisting in the laying of the wreath
  • Short Introduction
  • Chaplain's Prayer
  • Intoning of the names of fallen soldiers
  • Closing Prayer

Ellis wanted to remind the public that they are invited to any and all of these events, especially the 11 AM ceremony at the Bulloch County Judicial Annex. Please bring a chair for the ceremony.

Grice Connect plans on live streaming the Veterans Day Program at 11 AM on Monday on the Grice Connect Facebook Page.
