Local chess players of all ages are invited to compete in a two-level chess tournament, to be held on the campus of Statesboro High School on November 5th, 2022, beginning at 9am. All are encouraged to come, play, and have fun, while also helping to support the missions of the Lions Club International.
Players will compete in either the youth division (kindergarten through 8th grade) or the high school through adult division. A parent, guardian, or chaperone must stay on site with each player under the age of 16.
Participation will be limited to a maximum of 36 players per section.
Players will compete in five rounds of guaranteed play with rounds starting at 9:00 am, 10:15 am, 11:30 am, 12:45 pm, and 2:00 pm.
"We are holding this tournament to help support the 5 main tenets of the Lions Club International," said Richard McCombs, SHS teacher and president of the Statesboro club. "The main one that most people know about Lions is to help secure vision tests and help fund those who have no insurance or who have been going through a rough time to get glasses when needed. The other ones that we directly work with are helping with food insecurity and hunger, the Environment, Childhood Cancer, and Diabetes."
A registration form may be downloaded here.
Registrations must be mailed before October 31. The participation fee is a $20 check or money order made out to the Statesboro Lions Club. Payment must be submitted with the registration form. For tournament updates, go to the Facebook event page.
Questions about the tournament may be addressed to [email protected].
More about the Statesboro Lions Club
The local Lions Club has distributed monies to its goals both on local and international levels. Last year alone, the group helped more than 10 individuals receive eye exams and glasses who could not afford them otherwise. If you would like to donate additional funds to support these causes, your gifts could help ease the needs of someone who may need assistance in our local community.
The Statesboro Lions Club meets every fourth Monday of the month from 6-7pm at Fordham's Farmhouse.
