SEB Middle students earn top honors at Nan Rushing Write-Off

The 37th annual Nan Rushing Write-off contest was held on March 4.

Southeast Bulloch Middle School came away on top, earning both the overall grade level and team trophies, at the 37th annual Nan Rushing Write-off contest. 

"Thank you for taking your Saturday morning to compete in English language arts," said Nan Rushing, who started the competition 1985. "This competition reminds me how important language arts is." 

The Nan Rushing Write-off event is sponsored by Barr Law Offices, LLC of Statesboro, and was held on March 4 in conjunction with National Grammar Day and the end of Read Across America Week.

For the event, local students competed as individuals in eight English language arts categories, including:

  • Capitalization and punctuation
  • Mental concentration
  • Persuasive speech
  • Narrative writing
  • Persuasive writing
  • Vocabulary
  • Spelling and usage
  • Language expression

Students from Southeast Bulloch Middle School, Portal Middle High School, Langston Chapel Middle School and William James Middle School participated. 

Awards were given to the top two scoring individuals for each grade level (six to eight) in each category, as well as each overall grade level team and the overall winning school. 

The event was coordinated by Jessica Blanton, an English teacher at Southeast Bulloch, with assistance from other middle school language arts teachers across the district. For a full list of participants and winners, click here
