National Custodian Day is celebrated each year on October 2 to recognize those who keep our schools and workplaces safe and clean. The Mattie Lively Elementary School custodial staff was given the royal treatment in observance of this day on October 5.
Mattie Lively PTO super-parent Chianti Grant-Culver brainstormed the idea and was able to execute it with the help of the school's administration, teachers, other parents, and two generous local businesses.
The custodial staff was surprised with a delicious lunch at Longhorn Steakhouse, courtesy of PTO. Culver initially had the idea of renting a limo for the occasion but ran into some roadblocks (pun intended) in securing the service.
Thanks to community connections, the group still arrived in style for the lunch, chauffeured in SUVs provided by Kyle Durrence Chevrolet Buick GMC (Sales Manager Michael Peel) and Franklin Chevrolet Buick GMC (Vice President Stephen Franklin and Sales Professional Darrel Jones).

"We should celebrate and support businesses that go above and beyond for our community," Culver said. "I am grateful for Mr. Peel's and Mr. Franklin’s generosity!"
When the custodial staff arrived back at school after their meal, the surprises continued with a hallway parade in their honor. Students lined the halls with handmade signs and cheered as their favorite custodians walked through.
"My heart is still smiling," Culver said of successfully pulling off the surprise. "[It was] definitely a small gesture in comparison to all that they do each day, but it was so great to be able to share some love and appreciation with each of them."

The hardworking Mattie Lively Elementary custodial crew includes Anthony Davis, Jeanette Gibson, Brittany Lee, Allan Perkins, Irvin Reedy, and Ray Slater.
