Georgia Southern junior Pol del Castillo has been named the final Sun Belt Conference men's tennis Player of the Week for the 2024 Spring season, announced today by league officials.
Pol del Castillo stretched his current singles win streak to six with a pair of straight-set wins over the weekend, helping Georgia Southern clinch the No. 1 overall seed for this week's Sun Belt tournament and a share of the regular season championship, a first for the program. The Tarragona, Spain, native defeated Shamirul Shahril of Southern Miss, 6-2, 6-3, on Saturday and then knocked off William Ribero of Louisiana, 6-4, 6-0, on Sunday. He also teamed with Matthew Mitchell for a 6-1 doubles win over Southern Miss.
For the season, del Castillo is 15-5 in singles, including an unbeaten 7-0 mark in Sun Belt action this Spring. This is the first weekly honor for del Castillo, who was the Sun Belt's Freshman of the Year in 2022 and a first team singles honoree in 2023.
Pol del Castillo and the Eagles open up action in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Friday, April 19, with a 10 a.m. match against the winner of No. 8 Coastal Carolina and No. 9 James Madison at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
