Georgia Southern announced that a freshman football player passed away Thursday morning after a battle with cancer.
Tay McKibbins of Atlanta graduated from high school early and enrolled at Georgia Southern, Eagles Athletics said. He was an offensive lineman.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our friend and teammate Tay McKibbins,” head coach Clay Helton wrote. “Tay lost his battle with cancer this morning and our thoughts and prayers are with his family in Atlanta. He was taken away from us far too young, but his memory will always be etched on our hearts. He is forever an eagle. Love you, Tay!”
A GoFundMe was created to help support his family with funeral expenses and medical bills.
“Eagle Nation, we are heartbroken by the passing of our beloved teammate, Tay,” the GoFundMe said. “He was more than just a player—he was a brother, a leader, and a true embodiment of what it means to wear the Blue & White.”
