The Georgia Southern Clay Target Team stretched its win streak at the ACUI Scholastic Clay Target Program Collegiate Clay Target Championships by seizing the 2025 Division II Classic All Around (CAA) title. This is the fourth time in five years that the team has secured a title at the competition.
The victory came at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, where more than 1,000 participants from colleges and universities around the country turned out for the weeklong tournament. The Eagles captured the Division II title with a score of 447/500, while several individual team members also had standout performances. Lane Montford was the high overall winner for men in the Division II CAA and took 3rd in sporting clays. Cheyenne Anderson took 2nd in women’s Division II CAA, and Carson Chipman secured his first perfect 100 in trap shooting.
Head Coach and alumnus Marty Fischer (‘74) said that family support was a big factor in this year’s win.
“We took 18 kids to compete in San Antonio,” he said. “When we made dinner reservations, we made them for 64 people because of all the folks that came along.”
Fischer believes the team members have a championship mindset before they arrive on campus. Each student brings a history of winning and a drive to succeed.
“Everybody we’ve got on the team has won a large-scale contest during their high school clay target careers,” he said.
Divisions in the ACUI tournament are determined by the number of participants a team has and not the total enrollment at a college or university. While the size of the roster typically puts the team in Division II, Fischer says they will choose to compete in the highest division next year, going against varsity scholarship teams with more shooters on the roster.
“Next year we’re going full boat,” he said. “We’re volunteering to go to Division I.”
While the team is dominant on the scoreboard, Fischer notes that the students also excel in the classroom by maintaining academic scholarships.
“Every student has HOPE and is able to keep it,” he said.
Georgia Southern’s Clay Target Team is a club sport, administered by Campus Recreation and Intramurals. Club teams are organized and led by students. Most club sports are highly competitive at the state, regional and national levels.
