Eagles Baseball Fall in Series Opener to Southern Miss, 4-3

UP NEXT - The Eagles will play a doubleheader with Southern Miss on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. ET. The second game of the doubleheader will start 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Georgia Southern baseball team narrowly lost a conference series opener on the road at Southern Miss, 4-3. The teams will be back in action for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. ET.

Southern Miss (13-8, 1-3 SBC) got on the board first with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, and doubled the lead with another solo shot in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead shortly after when a bases-loaded wild pitch scored the runner at third. USM took a 4-0 lead after the bottom of the fifth inning from an RBI-single.

Georgia Southern (11-11, 3-1 SBC) got on the board in the top of an eighth inning when Noah Ledford had an RBI-groundout to the USM shortstop, scoring Jesse Sherrill. In the top of the ninth inning, Kyler Hultgren smashed a ball over the right field wall, scoring Sam Blancato as well and narrowing the gap to 4-3. Sherrill launch a ball to the same spot, but the USM right fielder barely made the grab, securing the win for the Golden Eagles.

Ty Fisher took the loss after pitching the fourth complete game of his career. Fisher finished the afternoon with seven hits, four runs, and five strikeouts on 104 pitches.
