Ben Carr ties for second, men’s golf finishes 11th at The Valspar Collegiate

The field featured six teams ranked nationally in Golfstat’s top-10.

Parker Claxton fired a 67, and Ben Carr shot 68 to lead Georgia Southern men's golf in the final round of The Valspar Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at The Floridian.

Carr (-10) tied for second with North Carolina's David Ford, a stroke behind medalist Ludvig Aberg (-11) of Texas Tech. The 18th-ranked Eagles (-3) finished two strokes behind Wake Forest (-5) and Duke and six shots out of a tie for sixth between No. 2 Arizona State (-9) and No. 14 Texas A&M. Fourth-ranked North Carolina (-27) earned the team title.

Twelve of the 15 teams in the field were ranked in the top-50, according to Golfstat, and six were ranked in the top-10. Twenty-seven individuals in the field were ranked nationally in Golfstat's top-100.

Carr birdied his first hole of the day and made an eagle on the 530-yard, par-5 13th to move to 2-under. The fifth-year senior player the final 11 holes of the day 2-under to post his 68.

Claxton began his day on the 11th hole, birdied his first three holes of the day and played his first 11 holes 6-under-par. The freshman wound up shooting 31 on the back nine and vaulted 21 spots up the leaderboard. Wilson Andress birdied his first two holes of the day on his way to an even-par 71.

"I thought the team prepared and fought hard; we just didn't perform to our capabilities, and that falls on me. The course is a big change from what we usually see, and I thought it took us some time to get adjusted and comfortable. Great venue and competition this week, and both will make us better moving forward.
