Senior Ramblings | Statesboro-Bulloch County Library-Followup Cell 101

Grice Connect's Senior Reporter, Michele LeBlanc, has discovered a new love of her cell phone. Thanks to a Cell Phone 101 class at the library, she and the class participants feel like teenagers because of their mad new cell phone skills. Thanks to this class you will no longer have to depend on your children or grandchildren for cell phone help!

ATTENTION Seniors!! Today I must tell you about the GREAT class I attended at the Statesboro-Bulloch County Library for Computer-Cell 101 training.

WOW, this was better than I thought it would be. Caroline Johnson, Library Manager, and Tiffany Vitatoe, Library Assistant, addressed the majority of the questions that were submitted prior to the class.

The library provided handouts and a PowerPoint presentation to walk us through some of our cell phone issues. The BEST part of the class was the great one-on-one assistance. It was like having your own private tutor. LOVE THAT!

Carolyn being familiar with Android and Tiffany with an iPhone made this class perfect! Another good thing was if they were NOT familiar with your question, they knew how to find the answer, show and explain how to get out of TROUBLE, without fear of the ‘what if’. GREAT INSTRUCTORS!!

This class had people equipped with either their iPhone or Android devices. Most of the questions were submitted prior to the class, which made it helpful to TARGET our challenges.

It was very ENCOURAGING seeing the intense looks on the participants' faces, as they sat waiting for their question(s) to be addressed and solved. Detailed handouts for your specific mobile device were given to us for take home references. Caroline and Tiffany provided one-on-one ‘walk through’ instructions. YES! YES! Definitely a thumbs up and a 5-star rating.

Thank you Bulloch County Library for your professional, very detailed and stress-free approach of instructing.

Several questions that were addressed were:

  •  How to take a screenshot on your Android/iPhone device and transfer it?
  •  What is a QR code and how do I access it and use it?
  •  How do I set up files for my email?
  •  How do I delete unwanted emails and block unwanted calls?
  •  How do I organize my photos for easy access?

There were more questions but little tim,e and the participants needed time to absorb and implement the instructions. Chuckle Chuckle! ‘ME’ included.

Carolyn confirmed that she, Tiffany, or any of the library assistants would be ready to address unanswered questions or any new computer or cell issues, individually or during the next class in July.

I was encouraged by the positive response from all of the individuals that were in attendance.

One of the participants, Ann Platt, a retired Bulloch County teacher, admittedly said that she was NOT technology savvy. She continued, saying, “It showed me how to use my phone (Android) more effectively. Apps, QR code, Facebook, saving items storage and retrieval. It gave me more CONFIDENCE about using my phone, and it is good to know that if I have questions, there is someone at the library that can help me.”

Another participant commented, “I liked the class because it was SMALL enough to address our questions and the knowledge the two women had concerning our phones. VERY INFORMATIVE."

Ja’Kori Cope (Kori), Grice Connect’s summer intern, accompanied me to the library for one of his first assignments. I LOVED that Kori had a chance to experience his first ‘Senior Moment.’

Kori remarked “This was basically a ‘walk in the park' for me. Being that I practically was born into the life of technology. From my perspective, the questions asked were mostly easy to me, BUT I understand from someone who had to ADAPT to technology, that it may be a little challenging, so I have come to learn and understand the difficulties older generations may go through.”

I must say, I am GLAD Kori was with me for two reasons. Firstly, he could empathize first hand with what we ‘Seniors’ experience and secondly, I had my own tutor. Thank you, Kori.

Seniors, I am truly excited to hear and share these positive and encouraging responses. WE need people like Carolyn and Tiffany types to share their knowledge and NOT only instruct but GUIDE us on how it is DONE!!

When you get the opportunity, swing by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Library and attend a class, or call or email your questions for a one-on-one instruction. NO question is too silly or minuscule.

Check the Grice Connect event calendar, library website, or monthly calendar for future classes. If you have a time conflict, call 912-764-1336 or email Caroline Johnson at [email protected]. She or one of the library assistants will try to accommodate you within library hours.
