On a very cold, blustery 53-degree rainy and windy Saturday morning in May -- a day that only a duck would love -- I ventured to the Statesboro Bulloch County Library to listen to first hand to "Storytelling in Statesboro."
WELL, WELL, WELL, do I have a secret to share! HOT OFF the press or shall I say, "Technology strikes again!!" The most phenomenal "digital walking tour of Statesboro" has appeared!!
20 historical sites featured in downtown
This digital walking tour includes a tour of 20 historical sites in downtown Statesboro presented by Georgia Southern's Dr. Ariel Cornett. Her presentation at the library explained how "we could travel back in time, reflect on the present, and envision the future in Statesboro." WOW! This is truly intriguing for a transplant like me.
This "Digital Walking Tour" has been created by two classes of undergraduate students in the College of Education under Dr. Cornett (Fall 2021 and Spring 2022, sections of ELEM 4533: Elementary Social Studies Methods) as well as public history experts, Dr. Brent Tharp, Director of the Georgia Southern University Museum and Vice President of the Bulloch County Historical Society, and Ms. Lillian Wingate, Regional Genealogy and Local History Coordinator at Statesboro-Bulloch County Library.
Dr. Cornett said, “They highlight the told (and untold) stories associated with important historical sites in downtown Statesboro.”
Self guided or virtual tour
You can stroll through downtown Statesboro and see these historical sites with full explanations and even ask questions by CLICKING HERE and take a self guided walk. You can also work with the library to have a planned group escort you. Or enjoy it in the comfort of your media room or home office or mobile device virtually.
It was AWESOME even for me with my minimal, very miniscule technology expertise. I could manipulate this application easily. DIGITAL WALK or STROLL -- either is the perfect way of enjoying Statesboro's history.
Entertain friends or WOW your guests
Invite some of your friends, family or even out of town guests to gather and share something real special. LOVE the fact that there are NO weather limitations (climate friendly), and the BEST of ALL, you can go at your own pace. Stop for a hot or cold beverage on the way.
