On May 2nd, 2025, residents of The Lodge at Bethany were off to the races in true Kentucky Derby style! This year’s celebration marked the 5th consecutive year the Derby has been honored at the Bethany community.
It was the biggest one yet, with a record turnout of 35 residents. The energy was high, the excitement was real, and the competitive spirit was alive as the ‘Bethany Racetrack’ came to life!
The fun began on Wednesday with the pre-party. Leading up to the Derby, excitement buzzed as residents picked out their hats and coordinated festive outfits. The residents especially embraced the tradition, donning beautiful, dressy hats, adding an extra touch of magic to the occasion.
To set the tone, Bethany’s activity staff planned a special showing of Secretariat, the inspiring true story of one of the most legendary racehorses in history. With fresh popped popcorn, cozy blankets, refreshing drinks, and personal snacks, the residents prepared to enjoy the movie. The film sparked anticipation for the main event, as some residents shared they had attended the Kentucky Derby and the movie brought back wonderful memories.
Friday arrived, and the party officially began. The highlight of the day was an interactive ‘horse racing game’, in which each resident chose their “winning horse” and took turns rolling large dice to determine which horse would move and how many spaces.
Laughter and cheers echoed through the room as horses advanced on the handmade racetrack. The thrill of competition brought out the best kind of Derby fun!
The room was decorated with red roses, Derby banners, horse door panels and horse-shaped balloons. The residents enjoyed mocktail mint juleps and tasty mint cookies, a sweet nod to tradition. The event was a hit from start to finish.
“We are always exploring how to offer our residents exciting, fun activities and engagement that will challenge them to do things they may not normally do to make them laugh and have a good time," Jerri Mathis, Accountant and Engagement Director said. "It is very rewarding when you see them living out their best life no matter what their ages. Walt Disney said it best, 'Growing old is mandatory, but growing up is optional'. You are never too old to have a good time, and it is evident in the activities we offer our residents.”
The Kentucky Derby party at ‘The Lodge at Bethany’ was more than just an event, it was a celebration of tradition, joy, and shared experiences.
