Roosevelt (Shugg) Hagins was born January 12, 1941, to the late Adock (Sonnyman) Hagins and the late Mamie Johnson.
He departed this life on July 8, 2025, at his home in Portal, Georgia.
Roosevelt attended the Portal school system. At an early age Roosevelt accepted Christ and was a member of Pine Grove Holiness Church. He was the guitarist; he was self-taught. He also sung with a few quartet groups comprised of his brothers and nephews. They won many competitions.
In October of 1960 he married the love of his life, Alma R. Jones. They later relocated to Philadelphia in 1963. Roosevelt was a hard worker, working at Mars Supply for 20 years as a foreman. He later became the Property Manager at Heidmann Trust for an additional 20 years.
Roosevelt and Alma’s service for the Lord continued and they joined New Hope Primitive Baptist Church under Pastor Robert W. Mack, where he served on the Usher Board and Choir.He left in 1974 to attend Messiah Methodist Church under the late Reverend Roosevelt Johnson for the next 20 years, where he continued serving as an usher and choir member.`
In 1990 after the passing of his mother he said he asked the Lord what he needed to do to stop the rapid death of his family. He was led back to New Hope with his wife and children. He became an Ordained Deacon and was head of the Trustee Board.In 2011, Roosevelt returned to Portal, Georgia, and returned to Pine Grove as the Chairman Deacon until he was called home.
Affectionately known as “Mr. Hagins”, he lived on the 3700 block of 10th Street with his wife for over 40 years. He was block captain and committee man. He employed many neighborhood youth and fed many when he decided to grill.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Alma R. Hagins; granddaughter, Ashley Drummer; six brothers,Adock Hagins, Charles Hagins, Emory Hagins, Leon Hagins, Sonny Hagins, and John Hagins; and four sisters, Lois Williams, Loice Washington, Carthie Lee Williams, and Annie Percell.
Roosevelt leaves to cherish his memory four daughters, Shawree A. Hagins of Millen, GA, Mary Drummer, Cecelia (Shella) Turner (Thomas), and Melissa Hagins, all of Philadelphia; one son, Roosevelt T. Hagins, Jr. (Tanya) of Philadelphia; brothers, Mack Aurthur Hagins (Katrina) and Timothy Hagins of Portal, GA; one sister, Judy McCray of Tampa, FL; two brothers-in-law, Billy Jones and George Jones (Cynthia) of Portal, GA; Eliza Hagins of Portal, GA; Nancy Williams of TX; 13 grandchildren, Paul Byron, Michael, D’vida, Shawnee, Tyrek, Roosevelt (T.J.) Hagans III, David, Derek, Cordell, Deja, Justin, Timeir; three great-grandchildren, NyJah, King, and Jalen; a special godgrandchild, Stacee; bonus children, Tendi, Bill, Craig, and Tracey; bonus grands, Tymeika, Thomas Jr., David, Hassan, and Asia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Viewing for Deacon Hagins will be Friday, July 18, 2025 from 4 PM to 7PM at Hill's Mortuary Inc.
Deacon Hagins will lie in state on the day of service, from 10 A.M. until the funeral hour.
The Celebration of life services for Deacon Hagins will be at Pine Grove Holiness Church in Portal, GA at 11:00A.M. with the Pastor Christopher Oglesby, officiating. Burial will follow at Deacon Hagin’s home.
