Mr. Gene Lewis Anderson, 68, of Westminster SC, passed away at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Anderson attended Screven County High School where after graduation in 1974 he attended Georgia Southern where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He worked at State Farm as an agent for a number of years before moving to California where he was employed by Mitchell International as a database manager and retired after 15 years.
He enjoyed everything outdoors, but was especially fond of hiking and the lake. He hiked the whole of the Appalachian Trail twice. He also was a Trail Runner, maintaining part of the Appalachian trail, welcoming and guiding new hikers along their way for months at a time. He also spent time as a guide on Lake Jocassee. He loved football, especially the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Georgia Bulldogs.
Gene was a stellar football player at Screven County High School for the 1970 - 1973 seasons. A four-year starter as linebacker, in 1970 he was the lone freshman starter for Don Tooles Gamecocks. As a member of the Lean Mean Seventeen in 1972 he started as linebacker and played extensively as fullback. He received the Golden Helmet Award that season as the teams MVP. His greatest athletic memory was returning a fumble 60 yards for a touchdown in a 7-7 tie with Statesboro in 1973.
He is survived by his wife, Gail Anderson, brother, James "Jim" Anderson (Gloria), Niece- Tiffany Anderson, and nephew Matt (Misty) Anderson. He is also survived by 3 children, Jeremy Jackson, Adam Mosso, and Mandy Strayer. Gene leaves behind thirteen grandchildren, as well as one great-grandchild.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, June 10, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Joiner Anderson Funeral Home, Screven Chapel. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 11, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner Anderson Funeral Home followed by burial at Screven County Memorial Cemetery in Sylvania, Ga.
Chaplain Ken Owens will be officiating the service.
