Tacos, Traditions and Turning the Page: Statesboro Service League celebrates end of service year with May picnic

The Statesboro Service League recently gathered for its Annual May Picnic, celebrating the conclusion of the 2024-2025 service year and welcoming a new provisional class, honoring its graduating class, and inducting new officers.

The Statesboro Service League gathered on May 1 for its Annual May Picnic, a beloved tradition that celebrates the conclusion of the 2024-2025 service year. This year's event embraced a festive Cinco de Mayo theme, bringing members together for an evening of fellowship, reflection, and recognition.

The picnic marked the official induction of the League's new provisional class, welcoming a group of committed and service-minded women who will begin their journey of volunteerism and leadership. This year's provisional class was spotlighted for their impactful project, Healing Hearts bags for Ogeechee Area Hospice.

Provisional member, Jamie Cromley, spoke about these thoughtfully curated bags, filled with meaningful tokens of care, designed to offer children and teens comfort during times of loss. The project provided hope and emotional support to grieving families in our community-an effort that exemplifies the compassion and service at the heart of the League's mission.

The League also honored its graduating class, recognizing their contributions and years of dedicated service to the community. In addition, the League proudly inducted its new and returning slate of officers for the upcoming service year:

  • Jana Phillips, President
  • Chelsea Pevey, Vice President
  • Rachel Brown, Recording Secretary
  • Caroline Howard, Corresponding Secretary
  • Leslie Akins, Treasurer
  • Adrien Spandle, Assistant Treasurer

These women will lead the League with integrity and enthusiasm as it continues to grow its reach and impact across Bulloch County.

A highlight of the evening was the celebration of the League's newest committee, "Love on Langston," which was launched as a project by last year's provisional class and has since grown into a vital initiative within the organization. The committee focuses on supporting the teachers and students of Langston Chapel Elementary School through acts of service, encouragement, and partnership.

Mr. Al Dekle, principal of Langston Chapel Elementary, spoke passionately about the positive impact the "Love on Langston" committee has had and how it has been instrumental in helping LCES foster a positive school climate. In a special moment, Mr. Dekle presented member Brittany Seeloff with the Roaring Lion Award in recognition of her exceptional leadership in launching and sustaining the initiative.

The evening also included a special tribute to one of the League's most treasured members. Rebecca Hooker was honored as the first-ever recipient of the Sarah Hines Legacy of Service Award, an accolade created to recognize outstanding, long-term service within the League. Named in honor of Sarah Hines, whose unwavering commitment and legacy of compassion have shaped the heart of the League, the award will be presented annually to a member who embodies the spirit of lifelong service.
