As families head to the beach, festivals, and other summer gatherings, the Statesboro Police Department is encouraging parents and guardians to take a few simple steps to help keep children safe during crowded public events.

While parents often remind children not to wander off, the unexpected can happen—especially in busy places. Taking a few moments before heading out to review safety procedures with your child can make all the difference.

The Statesboro Police Department recommends the following safety tips:

  • Memorize Names and Numbers: Ensure your child knows both their full name and your full name. Teach them your phone number using songs or rhymes if needed.

  • Use Identification Tools: Consider writing your contact information discreetly on their clothing or using a custom ID wristband.

  • Stranger Safety: Instruct children never to leave an area with a stranger, even if the person claims to know their parent’s name. Trusted adults will stay with the child and contact you to reunite safely.

  • Identify Safe Adults: Discuss with your child who they can safely approach for help, such as a fully uniformed police officer, lifeguard, or event staff member.
